We are delighted to announce that the first 'batch' of graduates has successfully completed all eight modules of the National Certificate in Butchering Skills. Fifteen participants in all have now made history by becoming the first Irish butchers to receive a national accredited qualification in butchering skills.

And ACBI has won the top award in the Aontas 2010 awards for workplace learning. (See Home page)

This innovative course which is undertaken 'on the job' is a real breakthrough.

Apart from putting our members in a position to offer recruits to the trade a national qualification it obviously also means that we are creating the next generation of butchers skilled and ready in due course to buy into existing businesses and secure the future of the trade.

Being part of the Qualifications framework it means that our graduates can take the next step up to undertake management or other training.

This course was developed from the ground up by ACBI and it is an achievement we can be justly proud of. An enormous debt of gratitude is owed to Skillnets which funded the development work and sad to say it looks as if this funding is going to run out at a time when we have not really completed our work.

Several people deserve our gratitude for their work in this project; our former Development Officer John Molloy did most of the initial spadework and got it to the stage where his successors could drive it forward.

Our current Training Manager Emer Brady successfully oversaw the acquisition of our Quality Assurance standard and brought the project to where it is today. ACBI is actually a FETAC approved Training centre. All of those involved in this historic project can take a bow! And many others.

The graduation ceremony will take place at SHOP on September 28th and more details will be in our next issue which will be a special ACBI Tenth anniversary issue
