While economic pressures are hitting the family budget the craftbutchers organisation has advised that the best solution to this, as to many things is an old solution; in this case the not so difficult art of meal making.
The idea that the creation of a nutritious value meal is beyond the skills of the average person is a myth, according to Craftbutchers President Hugh Maguire.
'Families can hit the twin objectives of healthy and economical eating by shopping wisely and learning a few basic skills in putting together a tasty stew or the classic 'Meat and two veg' solution' said Hugh.
Families are being assailed by the fast food industry with a barrage of propaganda about the value to be had from pizza, burger options and the like. While there is nothing wrong with the odd meal of this type it is neither healthy nor economical on a long term basis, craftbutchers warn.
And you can walk out of many craft butchers with the components of an entire meal for a price that would surprise most people.
Hugh Maguire, who appears on the RTE 'Afternoon Show' again on Friday March 5th in a feature on choosing quality pork and bacon says that the little extra effort involved in sourcing a quality retailer especially of locally produced meat, vegetables and other quality Irish food will repay the effort involved. 'After all, effort is free, and there is now an amazing array of recipes, including simple methods on how to prepare food available on the internet! Value is where it always was, in your own kitchen' he said.
A list of some of these websites appears on the ACBI 'Food for your table' page on this site or just Google recipes or the specific food you are cooking. Your family will be healthier for the effort you make!
