For some five years ACBI has been developing the course content for a new qualification for butcher apprentices which would be delivered on the job, that is in the butchers shop. This has been possible mainly with the support of the Skiilnets.
While this was the 'old way', when new entrants learned direct from. normally their father, this had some disadvantages, most obviously the lack of certification.
Young people know the value of certification and are entitled to the recognition it bestows. It also ensures consistency in what the apprentice learns.
We are now delighted to be in a position to pilot this new initiative having received approval from FETAC. The first 16 young entrants to the scheme have commenced the first modules in October 2005 and there are now 120 participants.
The important things about this is that you can start at any time; there are no 'academic terms'! Also you proceed at your own pace as you move on whrn you have achieved the level of competency.
