If there is any question that you feel we should add to this section or you feel a query is unanswered please feel free to email your feedback to Emer.Brady@craftbutchers.ie
What is the name of the awarding body?
The awarding body is FETAC, the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland, the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) gives people the opportunity to gain recognition for learning in education or training centres, in the work place and in the community.
What certificate will I achieve after completion of this programme?
You will be awarded a National Certificate in Butchering Skills.
What level is this award on the National Framework of Qualifications?(www.nfq.ie for more details)
The National Certificate in Butchering Skills is at Level 5 of the NFQ
How do I qualify to start this programme?
You must have placement within a retail butchers shop. At this moment in time we cannot assess candidates in supermarkets as they do not have resources to complete the Practical Meat Cutting Skills module. As this is an on-the-job qualification you must have the co-operation of a Mentor. This Mentor will be responsible for the training, upskilling and support throughout the programme.
Is there a minimum entry level as I have not done my Leaving Cert?
There is no minimum academic entry level nor age limit. Leaving Certificate standard would be an advantage.
Can I use my qualification to apply for college?
With 8 modules completed at distinction level you will have the equivalent of 400 points that can be used to apply through the CAO system at any stage. Anything less than distinctions will be worked out pro rata.
I cannot read or write but think I would make a great butcher, can I still take part?
Absolutely! There is nothing standing in your way of becoming one of the best crafts people in the country. It is a great time to get into this already booming industry. If you feel nervous about your literacy please don't. We have qualified assessors who are trained to deal with every eventuality. All assessments are completed in the utmost confidentiality on a one on one basis.
I own my own Craft Butchers shop for the last 30 years but never got a qualification, am I too old to take part?
It's NEVER too late to learn. There is no upper age limit to take part and we encourage the more senior and experienced butchers to set an example to the younger craftspeople.
Can ACBI place me in a job?
Unfortunately at this time due to lack of resources we cannot place people in jobs but we will do everything in our power to help people find placements where possible.
